The questions that come up

Repair & Maintenance
My car bumped the door. Do I need an inspection if it still works?
A door that still runs after a bump can still be carrying the effects of it. The force travels from the dent into the roller, the track, the bottom bracket and the cable on that side, and any of them can be nudged enough to change how the door hangs. An inspection follows that path and tells you whether the mark is cosmetic, whether a part needs work, or whether the balance has shifted. Garage Door Safety Inspection
Will the tune-up include replacing worn parts?
Small wear items found on the day, such as a roller or a hinge on a middle section, a bottom seal or a few fasteners, can often be replaced during the visit if you agree and the part is on the truck. Larger items, including springs, cables, drums, bottom brackets, a bent track or an opener gear, are written up as separate repairs with their own quote so you can decide with the facts in hand rather than under a raised ladder. My car is trapped inside. Can I lift the door by hand to get it out?
Lifting a crooked door is where most injuries around this problem happen, because the springs and cables are loaded unevenly and the door can shift suddenly. Tell the technician on the phone that a vehicle is inside; getting it out is part of the plan, and the door will be supported and levelled before it is raised. A short wait is far cheaper than a bent section or a hand caught between panels. Off-Track Garage Door Reset
The car has just hit the door. What should I do before you arrive?
Stop using the door and leave it where it is, whether open or closed, unless leaving it open is unsafe. Pull the opener's plug so nobody presses a remote out of habit. Keep people and pets clear, especially if the door hangs unevenly or a cable looks loose, since the springs are still under tension. Take a few photographs, find the manufacturer's label if you can, and tell the technician exactly what happened and how hard the contact was. Garage Door Panel Replacement

Springs & Hardware
What does stem length mean and why does it matter?
The stem is the steel shaft that passes through the hinge or fixture and carries the wheel. Most residential doors use a four-inch stem through a single hinge. Heavier doors have two hinges stacked at the ends of each section, and those need a seven- or ten-inch stem so the shaft reaches through both. A short stem in a double hinge sits loose, lets the wheel lean, and is a common reason a door leaves its track. The technician counts the hinges before choosing the set. What do the numbers stamped on garage door hinges mean?
They mark the joint the hinge belongs to, counted from the bottom. A 1 goes at the joint above the bottom panel, a 2 at the next one up, then 3, with 4 and 5 on taller doors. Each higher number stands the roller a little further off the door face, so the door leans into the jambs when closed and follows the track as it climbs. Centre hinges use the geometry of a 1. My door came off its track last month. Is this the same service?
It is the follow-on. Putting a door back on its track deals with the rollers and gets the door running again; track repair deals with the reason it left. If the reset showed a spread channel, a bent section or loose brackets, those are corrected now so the rollers stay put. Where nothing on the track was at fault and the cause was a cable or an obstruction, the track is simply checked and confirmed. Garage Door Track Repair or Replacement
What is the difference between a lift cable and a safety cable?
A lift cable does the work: it connects the door's bottom corner to the spring system and carries the door's weight. A safety or containment cable does no lifting at all. It runs through the middle of an extension spring and is anchored at both ends so that if the spring breaks, the pieces stay put. Torsion springs sit on a shaft and do not need one. Why will the door close only while I hold the wall button?
That is a built-in behaviour, not a new fault. When the sensor circuit reports a problem, most openers refuse to close from a remote but allow a constant-pressure close from the wall control, because someone standing there can see the doorway. It is a strong signal that the photo eyes or their wiring need attention, and once the sensor issue is corrected the door closes normally from every control again. What should I check before calling?
With the door closed, pull the red handle and try lifting the door by hand; note whether it is heavy or stays up on its own. Look at the chain for slack, rust or a broken link, and at the head for pale shavings. Note whether the motor runs at all, whether the door stops short or reverses, and where the trolley sits on the rail. The model on the head's label and a photo of the rail help too. Chain-Drive Opener Repair
The motor runs but the door stays still. What has happened?
Something between the motor and the door has let go. On a belt drive the usual suspects are a broken clip where the belt joins the trolley, a belt that has jumped off the sprocket or idler pulley, a trolley that failed to re-engage after the red cord was pulled, or a stripped drive gear inside the motor head, which leaves plastic shavings on the housing. Each is a specific repair. Belt-Drive Opener Repair
What happens to the old opener?
The technician takes it away. The steel rail, chain and angle iron go to metal recycling and the head unit, with its motor and circuit board, goes to electronics recycling rather than the landfill. Old remotes are cleared from memory before they are discarded or handed back to you, and any wiring that is not being reused is removed from the ceiling and walls so the garage is left tidy. Installation & Upgrades
Can the existing tracks stay with the new door?
A replacement is planned with track designed for the selected sections and hardware. Door thickness, completed weight, roller position, available headroom and operator location can all affect compatibility. Using the matched track package lets the sections and counterbalance operate as the system was designed, with geometry that can be checked during installation. Sectional Garage Door Replacement
What safety checks are done after installation?
The installer first checks manual balance, cable tracking, roller travel, track supports, fasteners and the fully open and closed positions. If an operator is connected, complete powered cycles follow. Photo-eye response, contact reversal according to the operator instructions, wall controls and emergency release are demonstrated. The customer also receives guidance on safe gripping points and keeping clear of section joints. Insulated Steel Garage Door Installation
Can two single doors be replaced with one wide door?
Yes, as a coordinated renovation. The centre support, new header or beam, side jambs, electrical routing, and finished opening are building-work considerations, while the sectional door needs suitable clearances, pressure criteria, reinforcement, tracks, and attachments. Structural design and door selection should be aligned before materials are ordered so each trade works to the same dimensions. Wind-Rated Garage Door Replacement
What happens if the garage floor is not level?
The survey measures the variation and determines how the bottom section and seal can meet it. A flexible astragal can accommodate modest changes, while a pronounced crown, dip or damaged threshold may call for related floor or threshold work. The door itself is installed level for reliable travel; the sealing approach is selected separately to follow the practical shape of the floor. Carriage-House Garage Door Installation
